1. Content

Having a great site with great content has always been working and will continue to work.  Providing good content is even more important today.

Provide good content only.  A few pages of great content is better than just filling up your site with loads of news RSS articles. Build informative content, provide quality resources and information on your website to become the authority in your industry and build authority into the pages that you want to rank.

Some people even suggest that you remove content that is not unique or useful information (don’t delete pages that are getting traffic).

2. Don’t over-optimize anchor text. 

Anchor text is text that is linked. Up to now, anchor text of incoming links has been one of the most important ranking factors.  But since the Penguin update, Google penalizes you for using the same anchor text too often.

So, what should you do? You must diversify anchor text. Don’t use the same keywords (especially commercial keywords)  in your anchor text many times.

Also keep in mind that since the Panda update, relevancy of your links is important.  This means that your blog or forum posting links must be relevant to the topic.

Some things that work: Get quality links

• Build quality links, e.g. links from authority sites. Don’t get links from shady websites.
• Provide value: The links you’re building should contain value and shouldn’t be there for the sole purpose of getting links to your website.
• Get relevant links (Get links from relevant content/sites)
• Build natural-looking links. (Don’t get too many links too fast)

Here are some things you can do to make your links look natural:

1. Get links from relevant content and when possible from relevant sites.
2. Use a large selection of backlink from a wide variety of sources.
3. Use many natural keywords to make sure that your money keyword isn’t used more than 20% of the time.

Here are some good tactics to build relevant links:

• Guest posts in relevant blogs are good for getting quality relevant backlinks from sites in your niche. Posting articles to websites that are relevant and interested in what you are writing about is natural. Guest posts on high traffic sites or blogs will also give you traffic without relying on search engines.
• Get a few natural links and citations that large businesses tend to get through normal business practices.
• Build brand recognition and authority more than traditional SEO links,  showing Google that your site  is the most recognised/liked brand in your industry.
• Buy a listing in the 3-4 reputable (paid) directories.
• Get listings in local directories and specialized directories.
• Try to get featured in an article in a reputable online magazine/newspaper, e.g. WSJ.  This could be a citation or a link, depending on the policy of that site.
• You can use a “few” links from normal “commercial” sources.  These could have an anchor text of the company name.
• Remove any dodgy sitewide sidebar or footer links using commercial terms. Sitewide brand links are OK if they’re on a trusted/non-spammy site.

• Directory submissions (local directories, specialized directories)
• Wiki Links
• Posting links on forums within your niche and providing links on forums within relevant content is natural.
• High PR social bookmarks are still working after the penguin/ panda update but make sure to use a variety of anchor text. Social bookmarking your page 1 time yourself at all major social bookmarking sites is natural and okay.
• Build the major social profiles, e.g. a Google Plus profile, e.g. by using “author” to associate quality articles with your G+ account.

Websites likely to lose rankings are sites with keyword stuffing and sites that have unnatural linking patterns. An example of unnatural links are links from spun content with anchor text that is unrelated to the content of their site.

To get good search engine ranking and keep your existing ranking, get quality content and quality relevant links with a large variety of anchor text.

Keywords should not be overused. When incorporating your keywords in your content, it’s important to keep your copy easy to read to the reader and not just to the search engines. Your content should be readable and should not sound artificial. If you repeat your keywords in every sentence, then your site might be rejected as a spam site.

A good way to make your copy easy to read is by writing your copy first without thinking about your keywords. If your content is focused, then your pages probably already include many of your keywords. After writing your content, go back and check to see if you have enough keywords. If you don’t have enough, add the keywords you are targeting to a few places where it feels natural. Also consider rewriting a few sentences to include your keywords.

Keyword density is expressed as a percentage of the total word content on a web page.
The recommended keyword density is between 3% and 5% and you should never exceed it.

To calculate the keyword density on a page you simply divide the total number of keywords by the total number of words that appear on your web page.

For example, 5 divided by 100 = .05. the above by 100, that is 0.05 x 100 = 5%.

Simple steps to check your keyword density:

• Copy and paste the content from an individual web page into a word-processing software program like MS Word.
• Check the number of words on a page. Go to the ‘Edit’ menu and click ‘Select All’. Now go to the ‘Tools’ menu and select ‘Word Count’. Write down the total number of words in that page.
• Now select the ‘Find’ function on the ‘Edit’ menu. Go to the ‘Replace’ tab and type in the keyword you want to find. ‘Replace’ that word with the same word, so you don’t change the text.
• When you complete the replace function, the word-processing program will tell you how many times you have used the keyword in that page.
• Using the total word count for the page and the total number of keywords you can now calculate the keyword density.

Make sure that you have enough keywords in every web page or blog page without overdoing it.
