How to Choose a Hosting Company

Choosing the right hosting company is important. Support and reliability are the most important factors you should look for when looking for a hosting service.

I’ve tried different hosts and had some problems with hosting companies in the past. I wrote these reviews and recommendations to help you make the right hosting choices.

Some hosting companies have outdated systems, some are down more often than they should and many cheap hosting companies don’t provide phone support.

If you’re serious about your Internet business, then you shouldn’t use crappy, discount web hosting – especially since good web hosting is very inexpensive anyway. Choosing the right host will prevent headaches and problems.

Here’s a couple of tips on how to choose a web hosting company:

  • Always choose a hosting company that you can contact by phone.
  • Choose a hosting company that is established.
  • Choose a large company. (I bought hosting from a reseller who died and for months I didn’t know who to contact to find out if the hosting was going to be suspended overnight)
  • Don’t buy hosting through eBay or other auctions. Those are mostly resellers. You’ll depend on an individual who will usually be unavailable when you need them and will provide little or no support.

I only recommend the following two hosting companies. I am using them for my own web sites and for my clients’ sites. They both have a great control panel and  provide great customer service. Both are equally good. Which of the two I choose depends on what specials they have available at the time I’m ordering.

Here’s why I recommend Blue Host or Host Gator:

  • They provide excellent 24/7 support.  You can reach them by phone and talk with their technical staff anytime. They really do their best to help you.  If often call them when I have a questions and other times I prefer using Live Chat Help over phone support depending on the questions I have.
  • They are reliable. Sites go down very rarely (although it has happened). It’s very important that your site doesn’t go down when you’re making money or are offering a special promotion.
  • You can have as many domains hosted as you want for the same cost.
  • They have a state of the art control panel.
  • They provide the tools to  easily set up WordPress blogs.
  • They also provide great free tutorials.

You can choose from different hosting plans to fit your needs. Starting at $6.96-$7.95/month you can “addon” an unlimited number of domains and have unlimited band width and unlimited space. You can start with their “baby” plan or “business” plan and upgrade later as needed. You can also upgrade from a shared account to a dedicated account.

Use or to register your domain before ordering hosting. I am using both and am happy with both.

Host Gator charges $15 for a domain registration and you can get the same registration at godaddy or namecheap for around $11-$12 and often less when they have promos.

I recommend or for domain name  registration.

Here’s the legal mumbo jumbo:

I only recommend products I believe in whether they have affiliate programs or not.  I am using both companies I’m recommending here for my own web sites or clients’ web sites and am still using them. Some links are affiliate links, and if you click on an affiliate link and purchase something, I might get paid a small commission.
