How To Choose A Blogging Platform

Choosing the right blogging platform is the first step in making money online.

Your blogging platform will affect search engines optimization, traffic and sales.

What blogging platform should you choose for your blog?

There are many blogging platforms you can choose from to create a blog and having many choices can be confusing. Here’s some guidance on what platform to choose as your blog website.

Some of the most popular platforms are WordPress and Blogger. If you are just looking for an easy way to build a small personal blog, then both Blogger and WordPress.com can offer you the basic platform to start your blog. But if you have plan on building a professional blog, or larger blog, or want to monetize your blog, go for WordPress.org., avoid a free sub-domain and invest a small amount of money for a domain and hosting.

Can you get a free blog?

Blogger (blogger.com) and WordPress (WordPress.com) are the two most popular free blogging platforms. You don’t even need to buy a  domain or hosting as they provide a FREE sub-domain on their site (e.g. xyz.blogspot.com) and free web space on their server (free hosting). Those are good options if you’re don’t want to spend money to create a blog and are not interested in making money.

But if you’re using the free hosting options offered by free blogs, you’ll have limitations that will severely limit your money-making opportunities. And free blogs don’t give you any credibility with your prospective customers.

So, to make money online, you’ll want to have a domain name and pay for hosting. The cost of a domain is only around $11-$12 a year and you can get hosting for around $5 to $10/month. So, those small fees are well worth it to increase your money-making opportunities.

WordPress is free software to create a blog.

It’s important to understand the difference between wordpress.org and wordpress.com. WordPress offers a hosted (wordpress.com) and self-hosted option (wordpress.org). WordPress.org is different from WordPress.com though both of them work on the same core system. You want to use wordpress.org and get your own domain name and hosting to build your money-making blog.

Surveys indicates that bloggers love WordPress  about 7 times more than blogger, the second popular blogging platform.

The core software is free and is built by hundreds of community volunteers.

I recommend WordPress (wordpress.org) over other blogging platforms for many reasons. Here are some advantages of WordPress:

  • Availability of thousands of plugins to make your blog more powerful.
  • Availability of thousands of themes (free and paid), including very professional themes and widgets for WordPress.
  • Very  customizable (many options and features to choose from).
  • User-friendly and easy to learn (but not as easy as blogger).

Genesis Framework for WordPress

WordPress is an easy blog platform and content management system for beginners (Note that Drupal is better for more complicated CMS (content management system) but most bloggers don’t need advanced CMS and prefer WordPress.

WordPress is easy to install – especially if you have good hosting that comes with a C-Panel system where you can install WordPress on your server with a click of the button. You only need to tell it if you want to install it on the main directory or subdirectory. If you choose a subdirectory, you give it a name. Then you put in a user name and password, click on a button and you’re done.

Although it’s easy to start using a WordPress blog, there will be some learning curve to use some of the more powerful capabilities of WordPress.  For example, there are some plugins you will want to add to your WordPress blog.  Plugins are software that provide extra functionality. For example, they can improve SEO,  add slideshows, moderate comments and much more. Some themes are more user friendly than others. But some customization will require knowledge of CSS code.

Blogger
Creating a blog with Blogger is very easy. You go to blogger.com, log in with your Google account or create a new account.  Then you follow their very easy directions. It takes just a few easy steps and a couple of minutes to set up your blog.

Benefits of Blogger:

  • Availability of a large amount of templates (but not as many as WordPress).
  • Blogger provides a free sub-domain of its site (your url will look like abc.blogspot.com) and unlimited web space on its server. You also have a choice to buy your own domain and move your blogger blog to your custom domain.
  • Blogger is owned by Google.

Disadvantages of Blogger:

  • Blogger doesn’t provide plugins and automated SEO features like WordPress does, there are less templates,  less flexibility and limited potential to add extra  functionality.
  • Changing/editing a template requires knowledge of HTML.

Summary:

If you are just looking for an easy way to build a small personal blog, then both Blogger and WordPress.com can offer you the basic platform to start your blog.

But if you have plan on building a professional blog, or larger blog, or want to monetize your blog, go for WordPress.org., avoid a free sub-domain and invest a small amount of money for a domain and hosting.
